The Christmas tree is up at home and I’ve already visited some out of state family members. This is certainly a happy time of year.
I’d like to take this opportunity to reflect upon the progress made by the campaign in 2017. As many of you know, I have not made a previous run for office. I had called myself an Independent for most of my adult life. But after Mr. Trump’s election, I began to see the world differently. I felt (and continue to feel) that Mr. Trump is moving America in the wrong direction. He has caused our friends around the world to doubt us and he has emboldened our enemies. I recognize that most people who voted for Mr. Trump did so because they wanted change, or they thought Hilary Clinton was worse, or they were used to voting for their party. But I think we all recognize that, after the election, racist and sexist people feel empowered to spew their hateful views. Many people who voted for Mr. Trump have told me, “It’s not turning out the way I had hoped.”
This summer, the TrumpCare proposal to cut healthcare coverage pushed me over the edge, and I decided to look into a run for Congress. Although I was new to politics, I found that folks in the region have embraced the concept that voters should have a real choice in November, 2018. They want to elect a representative who will vote in Congress to ensure that America’s laws are followed, a representative who will put Country over Party. I received kind words and support from local Democratic leaders, but also from Independents and Republicans; in fact the first local donor to the campaign was a Republican. A campaign was begun, and we have now progressed to the establishment of a campaign headquarters in Johnson City (near I-26) and have begun the recruitment of professional staff.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have stepped up to support my campaign for the US House of Representatives. I and many others feel the results of the recent election in Alabama show that Americans are in the process of rebuffing Trumpism. I am excited by the opportunity to help my fellow citizens of East Tennessee improve Healthcare coverage, job prospects, and educational opportunities by serving all of you in Congress.
Have a great holiday season. I hope most of you have the chance to spend time with family as I will myself in the next several days. Save some energy for 2018, and I look forward to your help in winning an election and promoting Responsible Change.
